Among cowpokes, lumberjacks, fishermen and hunters — and probably miners, and railroad workers too, liars’ contests are the Olympics of storytelling.

And most Southerners consider it positively a birthright to be able to one-up one another with a tall tale. Get a true “gar-an-damn-tee-you” Cajun going, and you’ll hear some fine, wondrous tales.
Two movies recommended, just for you: Fried Green Tomatoes, and Big Fish.
Both chock full of terrific tall tales.

A liar’s contest is just what it sounds like. Contestants compete to see who can tell the biggest whopper.

Just think of the Steinhoff dinner table when you Uncle Mark is home, except with prizes.

One nice thing about wandering around in cemeteries as opposed to some other places where you might be considered a vagrant: Even if you’ve come by bicycle it’s easy for people to assume that you’ve come to see a relative’s grave. It sounds like that holds true at the Coon Dog cemetery, too.
